AppPerfect Installation Guide

You will need administrator rights on Windows machines and root access on Linux/Solaris machines to install AppPerfect products. If you do not have these privileges, please contact your system administrator.Instructions given below are Windows-specific; if you are using a non-Windows machine, please use equivalent commands / instructions.

  1. Installation instructions for AppPerfect DevTest4J, AppPerfect Test Studio and AppPerfect Entperprise Server products.
  2. Installation instructions for AppPerfect Agentless Monitor product.

UI-based Installation (AppPerfect DevTest4J, AppPerfect Test Studio and AppPerfect Entperprise Server)

Launch the AppPerfect installer by double-clicking on the downloaded executable file (e.g. AppPerfectDevTest4J90_win.exe, AppPerfectTestStudio90_win.exe etc). A wizard will show up and take you through the installation process. The various tabs are described below.

  1. Introduction:
    • Please go through the "Introduction" screen. This will brief you about the installation process and details about the AppPerfect product that will be installed. Click on the "Next" button.
  2. License Agreement:
    • Read the AppPerfect Software License Agreement (ASLA) carefully.
    • If you agree to all terms of the ASLA, select "I accept the terms of the License Agreement" and click on the "Next" button to proceed further. If you do not agree, click on Cancel and do not proceed.
  3. Registration Information:
    • Enter your name, your company name and the license key. All 3 fields are required and cannot be left blank.
    • The license key is a 32 character string provided to you via email by AppPerfect when you registered for the product download. If you do not have the license key, contact AppPerfect Sales at sales(at)AppPerfect.com.
    • Once all information is entered, click on the "Next" button to proceed further.
  4. Select Destination Directory:
    • Select a folder where you wish to install AppPerfect. We recommend using the default installation folder selected by AppPerfect.
    • To specify your own location click on the button "Browse..." and select a location for installation. Click on the "Next" button to proceed further.
  5. Enterprise Server Settings:
    • Specify the port settings. The AppPerfect Enterprise Server requires two ports: one for startup and one for shutdown. Similarly, AppPerfect Enterprise Server also requires a port which its embedded database will use. We recommend using the default ports provided by AppPerfect. Click on the "Next" button to proceed further.
  6. Administrator Settings:
    • Configure the ‘administrator’ user. The administrator is the first user of the AppPerfect Enterprise Server and has full control over the AppPerfect Enterprise Server system.
    • Enter first name, last name and email address of the administrator.
    • Provide password and re-type the value in confirm password field. Please make a note of this password some place safe as this is going to be your password to login into Enterprise Server. To login first time into AppPerfect Enterprise Server please use username as "administrator" and password you just provided.
    • Provide password hint so that application can show you this question in case you forget the password.
    • Click on the "Next" button to proceed further.
  7. External Applications:
    • The installer automatically detects the default Web browser's path and displays it in the "Browser Path" field. If you want to change browser then click on "Browse..." button and select the browser you want AppPerfect to use. Click on the "Next" button to proceed further.
  8. Email Notification Settings:
    • AppPerfect Enterprise Server provides various means of notifying users. Select the Enable Email Notification check box to configure email notification. Under 'Sender's Info' type the name and email address of the default Notification sender. For example, User Name: 'administrator' and Email Address: 'admin@Company.com'. Also enter the SMTP mail server address that will be used to send out the notifications. Provide authentication details for the SMTP server if required. When you finish entering the necessary information, Click on the "Next" button to proceed further.
  9. Choose Shortcut Folder:
    • There are a number of options available for creating application shortcuts. Select option where you want to create the application shortcuts.
    • It is recommended that you use the default selection. Click on the "Next" button to proceed further.
  10. Installing:
    • This tab displays progress of the installation.
  11. Installation Complete:
    • On successful installation a congratulatory message with the folder location where AppPerfect is displayed. Click on the "Done" button.
    • A "Readme" file will be launched in a browser. If shortcuts were installed, then the shortcut folder should be opened in a new Explorer (or equivalent).

NOTE (Windows 2000/XP/2003): On windows operating system for Non-Admin users AppPerfect product may not work correctly. This happens due to insufficient read/write permissions of install folder. We recommend to set ‘Everyone’ read/write permissions to install folder and its sub-folders/files so that all users can use AppPerfect product. Please contact your system administrator for assistance.

We recommend that before installing product you create a install folder for AppPerfect say "C:\AppPerfect" and set ‘Everyone’ read/write permissions to this folder. Now during installation select this folder as install folder for AppPerfect Products. The reason to follow this approach is then all files and sub-folders in this folder will automatically have proper permissions set.

Also take care to create ‘workspace’ location inside this install folder only otherwise AppPerfect product may not work correctly due to insufficent read/write permissions to workspace location and its sub-folders/files.

Console-based installation (Typically needed for headless Unix boxes) (AppPerfect DevTest4J, AppPerfect Test Studio and AppPerfect Entperprise Server)

Launching AppPerfect installer in console mode. Open a Terminal window and navigate to the directory where the AppPerfect installer file (e.g.AppPerfectDevTest4J90_lnx.sh, AppPerfectTestStudio90_lnx.sh etc.) is present. Remember to unzip the downloaded .zip installer file in order to extract the .sh installer file.

At the command prompt type the command "./AppPefectDevTest4J90_lnx.sh -q -dir /home/user/AppPerfect/DevTest4J" or "./AppPerfectTestStudio90_lnx.sh -q -dir /home/user/AppPerfect/TestStudio" and press the Enter key.

This will launch the AppPerfect installer in console mode. The installer consists of a series of steps as described below.

  1. Introduction:
    • Introduction text will be displayed. This will brief you about the installation process and also display details about the AppPerfect product you are about to install. Please go through the Introduction and press the <ENTER> to continue.
  2. License Agreement:
    • Read the AppPerfect Software License Agreement (ASLA) carefully. A message asking "DO YOU ACCEPT THE TERMS OF THIS LICENSE AGREEMENT? (Y/N)" will be displayed.
    • If you agree to all terms of the ASLA, type "Y" and press the <ENTER> key to continue. If you do not agree, type N and press the <ENTER> key to abort the installation process.
  3. Registration Information:
    • A message asking to specify user name will be displayed. Type a "User Name" and press the <ENTER> key to continue.
    • A message asking to specify company name will be displayed. type a "Company Name" and press the <ENTER> key to continue.
    • A message asking to specify a valid License Key will be displayed. For successfully installing AppPerfect, you will have to provide a license key for the AppPerfect product. The license key is normally sent to you in the same email as the download instructions. If you do not have a license key, contact AppPerfect Sales at sales(at)AppPerfect.com.
    • Please type the license key provided by AppPerfect and press the <ENTER> key to continue.
  4. Choose Link Location:
    • There are many options available for creating application links. A message asking "DO YOU WANT TO CREATE LINKS? Choose Options (Y/N)" will be displayed.
    • If you want to create link type "Y" and press the <ENTER> key to continue.
    • If you have selected yes, please provide the location where you want links to be created and press the <ENTER> key to continue.
  5. Administrator Settings:
    • Configure the ‘administrator’ user. The administrator is the first user of the AppPerfect Enterprise Server and has full control over the AppPerfect Enterprise Server system.
    • A message asking to specify first name will be displayed. Enter first name and press the <ENTER> key to continue.
    • A message asking to specify last name will be displayed. Enter last name and press the <ENTER> key to continue.
    • A message asking to specify password will be displayed. Enter password and press the <ENTER> key to continue.
    • A message asking to confirm password will be displayed. Re-type the password and press the <ENTER> key to continue.
    • A message asking to specify password hint question will be displayed. Enter the password hint question and press the <ENTER> key to continue.
    • Please make a note of this password some place safe as this is going to be your password to login into Enterprise Server system. To login first time into AppPerfect Enterprise Server please use username as "administrator" and password you just provided.
    • A message asking to specify email address will be displayed. Enter the email address and press the <ENTER> key to continue.
  6. Installing:
    • The installer will now install the AppPerfect product at the specified location.
    • Once the installation is complete you will get back to the command prompt.

UI-based Installation (AppPerfect Agentless Monitor)

To login first time into AppPerfect Monitor please use username as "administrator" and password you just provided.
    • Click on the "Next" button to proceed further.
  6. Monitor Server Settings:
    • Specify the port settings. The AppPerfect Monitor requires two ports: one for startup and one for shutdown. Similarly, AppPerfect Monitor also requires a port which its embedded database will use. We recommend using the default ports provided by AppPerfect. Click on the "Next" button to proceed further.
  7. Email Notification Settings:
    • AppPerfect Monitor provides various means of notifying users of alerts in the system. Select the Enable Email Notification check box to configure email notification. Under 'Sender's Info' type the name and email address of the default Notification sender. For example, User Name: 'administrator' and Email Address: 'admin@Company.com'.     • Application will show the port settings, make a note of the values. The AppPerfect Monitor requires two ports: one for startup and one for shutdown. Similarly, AppPerfect Monitor also requires a port which its embedded database will use.
    • A message saying "Press any key to continue will be shown". Press the <ENTER> key to continue.
  7. Installing:
    • The installer will now install the AppPerfect product at the specified location.
    • Once the installation is complete you will get back to the command prompt.
